“I’m just a normal bloke who likes a bit of torture,” Read explains at the start, a twinkle in his eye. In its way, Dominik’s depiction of Read is reminiscent of Terrence Malick’s characterisation of Kit (Martin Sheen) in Badlands: both men are killers drawn like moths to the flame of celebrity, Read luxuriating in the role of the everyday joker whom circumstances have cast as a tough guy in much the same way as a curiously innocent Kit fashions himself as a James Dean clone.

Read’s hooker girlfriend Tanya (Kate Beahan) insists that she’s loyal to him, despite her profession, yet the precise nature of her fidelity remains an intangible.īut Read/Chopper is the film’s central enigma. Drug dealer Neville (Vince Colosimo), a former victim of Read’s standover tactics, says he bears no grudges when they run across each other in a bar, although it’s never clear whether or not he’s sincere. His enigmatic performance is crucial to the film’s approach to character.Ī character who appears to be a friend one minute - like Jimmy (Simon Lyndon), Read’s “mate” in Pentridge’s H Division - can become a Judas the next. The New Zealand-born Dominik, in a most assured directorial debut, ensures that we remain in doubt about them too.ĭominik’s master stroke is the casting of Bana. Everyone is forever suspicious of everybody else’s intentions, and, whether they’re behind bars or not, they’re all prisoners of a pervasive paranoia.
