“I’m just a normal bloke who likes a bit of torture,” Read explains at the start, a twinkle in his eye. In its way, Dominik’s depiction of Read is reminiscent of Terrence Malick’s characterisation of Kit (Martin Sheen) in Badlands: both men are killers drawn like moths to the flame of celebrity, Read luxuriating in the role of the everyday joker whom circumstances have cast as a tough guy in much the same way as a curiously innocent Kit fashions himself as a James Dean clone.

The rest - bookended between two segments of a sequence (set in 1991) in which, flanked by two approving prison warders, he watches himself being interviewed on TV - is strategically murky. He doesn’t like people questioning his authority and he likes being the centre of attention. Having shot Neville for not doing as he’s told, he then drives him to the hospital. After repeatedly stabbing a fellow Pentridge inmate (David Field) in a furious explosion of violence, he curses himself, apparently in a passing fit of remorse. At one point, he describes himself as “a bit schizo”, and he repeatedly seems genuinely upset at the consequences of his various assaults on people. He is a walking collection of contradictions, his savagery as an enforcer sitting very uncomfortably alongside his good humour as a conversationalist. Read’s hooker girlfriend Tanya (Kate Beahan) insists that she’s loyal to him, despite her profession, yet the precise nature of her fidelity remains an intangible.īut Read/Chopper is the film’s central enigma. Drug dealer Neville (Vince Colosimo), a former victim of Read’s standover tactics, says he bears no grudges when they run across each other in a bar, although it’s never clear whether or not he’s sincere.
